K9 Nose Work®

K9 Nose Work® is a dog sport modeled after professional scent detection dogs that is different than the sport of tracking. This sport builds on a dog's natural ability to hunt and detect scent, and determine its location. And the best part is that every dog can do nose work!

I offer group classes and private K9 Nose Work® training in the greater Milwaukee area. With a special interest in working with sensitive and "reactive" dogs, I've seen first-hand how this activity can transform behavior. When properly facilitated, K9 Nose Work® can help dogs feel more comfortable in their environment, which makes it a perfect complement to almost any behavior modification program.

Private K9 Nose Work Lessons

Private lessons are perfect for dogs and handlers of all experience levels and especially go for:

  • Puppies, shy dogs, environmentally sensitive dogs, and dogs that display reactive behaviors towards humans.

  • Problem solving undesirable situations such as box smashing, fringe alerting, and lack of focus on odor.

  • Dog-handler teams looking to increase their competition performance and work on search area strategies, time management, and appropriate reward systems.

K9 Nose Work® can benefit your dog in many ways!

  • Dogs easily burn lots of mental & physical energy playing "the game"

  • Searches can be done anywhere you can take your dog

  • No prior training is required and no obedience is needed

  • In classes, dogs work one at a time and rest crated or safely in a vehicle between searches so sensitive and reactive dogs can enjoy the activity, too

  • Shy or fearful dogs build confidence and overactive dogs put their energy into fun searches

  • Stronger bond between dog & handler develops as the human learns to observe, understand, and rely upon his dog

Who can do K9 Nose Work®?

Unlike other dog sports, K9 Nose Work® can be performed by any dog regardless of breed, temperament, or age.  It is a wonderful game for dogs recovering from medical issues and dogs in their Golden years, still wanting to participate in a low impact highly enjoyable activity. Active dogs and retired sports competitors can also enjoy the mentally stimulating aspect of scent work. Reactive dogs can comfortably learn this sport due to the fun, controlled environment.

This sport is a great way to keep your dogs active through cold winters, hot summers, and can be done in your home. K9 Nose Work® can be played at home for those not wishing to compete and it can be taken to a high level of expertise for those who welcome competition.

Competition in the sport of K9 Nose Work®

The sport of K9 Nose Work® provides a venue for dogs & handlers to test their scent detection skills in real-world settings with blind (location unknown to the handler) hides set in timed searches representing each of the four elements of competition: container, interior, exterior, and vehicle. Learn more about competing in K9 Nose Work® at www.nacsw.net.
